Aleister Crowley's Occult Societies

Prior to founding his own religion of Thelema on the island of Sicily in 1920, he had been a member of three other important organisations:

Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (G.D.)

This was already a very well-established organisation with branches throughout the UK when Crowley joined it in 1898.  By the end of 1989 he had reached the grade of Adeptus Minor in the Second Order in record time before being expelled from the order later in 1900.

Astrum Argentum AA

Crowley founded this organisation in 1907, along with his sponsor for membership of the Golden Dawn, George Cecil Jones, after the schism within the G.D. and his falling out with its leader, Samuel Liddell Mathers.  Jones was basically a 'sleeping' partner, and as far as we can tell, the organisation has never officially been 'wound up'.

Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.)

Aleiister Crowley joined the Ordo Templi Orientis in 1910 after a meeting Theodor Reuss, the Head of the Order.  In 1912 he was elevated to the IX and became Head of the English speaking branch of the Order.  Later, in 1924, he became the Outer Head of the Order and remained so until his death in 1947.
